The first coat of resin soaks into the brick or terracotta (and cement grouting) and bonds within the surface of the floor. The subsequent coats are applied before the first application of resin is completely cured. This technique forms a bond between applications so that the resin forms a consistent layer within the floor and through on to the surface which is fully bonded into the floor and is solid, strong, won’t discolour, wear or peel off.

Each coat is applied very generously, flooded in by hand with a paint pad, allowed to soak in, and then fully “ragged off” with absorbent cotton cloths. Most floors require two applications until they are fully filled, some may require three. Ragging off the final coat leaves a natural-looking, even, mid-sheen finish that doesn’t look overly “plasticky”, as topical sealers tend to look.

This creates a 100% aliphatic urethane resin filled surface fully bonded into the floor that is solid, strong, won’t discolour, wear or peel off.
The nature of the resin (an aliphatic urethane) means it enhances the colours of the brick and it doesn’t yellow with age. It is the toughest and longest-lasting resin available. The manufacturers say that the resin filling will last the lifetime of the floor, so it’s a one-off permanent treatment.

The Resin leaves a richly coloured floor with an easy-to-clean, dust free, mid-sheen, smooth surface that replaces the normal dusty, rough texture of clay-based floors while keeping their beauty and style.

How Much Will It Cost?

We are not the cheapest company and have never aimed to be, we are also not the most expensive. We offer high quality work at fair prices. We will provide you with a free fully inclusive and firm quote before work starts, we don’t hide any part of the price and just charge what we quoted for.

We might be able to give a ball park cost over the phone but really we need to complete an inspection visit to provide a firm price. This also allows us to properly understand what work needs to be done, the state of the floor we are working with as well as other particular conditions relative to working in your home. We also need to understand what finish you want on your floor and can often show you samples.

This inspection and quote visit is free and you have no obligation to use us after. It will be carried out by an expert cleaner and not a pushy salesperson.

Other Sealing Options

Up until now there have only been two ways to finish a clay floor - penetrating sealers or topical sealers. Penetrating sealers soak into the floor, so don’t wear and leave a completely matt invisible finish, but they leave the rough surface unchanged, so it holds on to dirt and is difficult to keep clean with day to day cleaning. Topical sealers form a smooth easy-to-clean layer on top of the tiles, but they don’t soak in, they can wear and flake off. Topical sealers can also have an undesirable “plasticky” finish and can discolour over time.

Rothwell’s still offers a long-lasting (15 years + ) impregnating sealer that a small number of clients still want. It leaves a completely matt invisible finish, is cheaper to apply and does prevent liquids from soaking in. But it leaves a hard to maintain floor, that whilst long lasting, won’t last as long as a resin filled floor. Brick floors sealed with an impregnating sealer will build up dirt in the pits of the surface and will need professional cleaning to remove. We would recommend resin filled brick floors.

Timing

Cleaning - For domestic homes this can normally be done within a day depending on the size of the area and if there are any old sealers to remove. For large commercial sites this will obviously be a bit longer, but with our team at Rothwell’s we have capacity to complete projects within reasonable time constraints.

Drying – The bricks need to fully dry before the resin can be applied. This normally takes 3-5 days.

Resin Filling – We want to apply each application of the resin within 24-48 hours of each other. Normally we will apply one application per day for two consecutive days, and come back on the third day to check the finish and make sure you are happy with the result. If on the rare occasion a third application is needed or desired, we would apply it then.

The floor is ready for light use within 12 hours of the last application and normal use within 48 hours.

This means from start to finish we are normally completed within a week to ten days.
