7 Point Guide To Hiring Trades Companies

There are many good trade companies and individuals out there but unfortunately, there are also some bad ones. This can be because they are untrained, uncaring or just downright unscrupulous.

In most trades, you get what you pay for and that is certainly true of cleaning. Please read my 7 point check list and never be afraid to ask questions and trust your gut.

7 things to look out for in all trade companies.

  1. A published address (If a company only provides you with a mobile number and no address, completely avoid them, this is the easiest tell-tell sign of a rouge trader. They do not want you to have a way of chasing them if something goes wrong. Our main address is Rothwell’s Cleaning Services Ltd, Malting End, Kirtling, Newmarket, CB8 9HH – 01638 428 060)
  2. The knowledge and know how to get the required results. (A company with years of trading and experience is preferable. Look for a professional membership to a relevant industry trade organisation, but check the organisaion is one that requires training as there are some out there that are general to all trades and have little or no requirements to join. The relevant industry trade association for carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning is the National Carpet Cleaners Association of which Rothwells Cleaning Services Ltd is a senior member of. https://trustedlocalcleaners.ncca.co.uk/listing/rothwells-cleaning-services-ltd/
  3. The right equipment to do the job. (unfortunately in the cleaning world many cheap companies try to do the work with completely unsuitable machines a bit like the small machines people might by or rent for DIY cleaning. A large powerful portable or better a van-mounted hot water extraction machine is needed. Van-mounted cleaning systems have much more power, produce constant, reliable hot water and have high vacuum power to give a deeper clean with heat to sanitise and kill dust mites.)
  4. Fully Insured. (Including for treatment risk, the risk of causing damage to the items you are working on, this is not included in standard business insurance).
  5. Make sure a fully inclusive, firm price is given before work starts. (The cost should include all stages to complete the work to a high standard. Unfortunately some companies will deliberately quote a cheaper price to get the work and then increase that later once work has begun. This common tactic in carpet cleaning is called bait and switch, it has been made illegal, and was revealed in BBC Rough Traders as seen here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UewL4gAzt8s. All of our quotes at Rothwell’s carpet cleaning include all products, time, and stages for a full deep clean. We offer stain protection as an optional extra and will give you the cost of that before you choose whether you want it or not. Our prices are firm, fair & fully inclusive, no hidden extras.)
  6. No deposit. (We know lots of qualified, experienced carpet cleaners all over the country and none of them charge a deposit. There will be some trades that will need a deposit but this should normally only be for purchasing of products for your job and should always come with a receipt.)
  7. Reviews from previous customers. (check any company on Google for genuine customer reviews, and ask friends or neighbors if they have used them.)
