How we renewed a paved drive to leave it clean, weed free, and protected for years to come.

We had a call from a customer asking if there was anything we could do with their paver driveway. It had been down for quite some years (they couldn’t remember exactly how long) and was now looking very tired. As well as being generally dirty and a bit of algae growth, the colours had started to fade, weeds and moss were growing in the joints and one or two pavers had even slipped out of place slightly. All these problems are common and I had a good idea what needed to be done so arranged a visit to inspect and confirm my initial thoughts and give a firm cost to put it right.

Obviously the first thing to do was to clean the area, which we did with our high capacity, petrol engine, pressure washer and various paver cleaning products. We also added some algae and lichen treatments to clean and remove the spores growing in the surface of the pavers.

When cleaning we deliberately spent a lot of time and care to remove the old sand between the pavers. This old sand had been half washed away and replaced with mud, dirt and dead moss creating a perfect place for weeds and moss to thrive. It also means the pavers are not held in place as well and can move or sink giving a wonky patch to the drive. By removing this mix of mud and sand we can replace it with new kiln dried sand blocking up the areas weeds grow and holding the pavers in place.

Once we had a clean drive with new kiln dried sand between the joints we needed to keep it like this so we sealed it with two coats of paver sealer. The sealer will protect against general dirt build up as well as algae and lichen growth in the porous surface. Designed to set the sand between the joints hard the sealer prevents the sand simply washing away with the rain. It colour enhances the pavers giving back some of their new colour and has inbuilt UV protection to prevent future colour loss.

Luckily this drive wasn’t in really bad condition and didn’t need our resurfacing treatments to look great again. We left a very happy customer, with a great drive that will last for years with just the simplest maintenance cleaning with nothing more than a brush and a hose to remove lose surface dirt in the future.

We might be able to give a ball park cost over the phone but really we need to complete an inspection visit to provide a firm price. This also allows us to properly understand what work needs to be done, the state of the surface we are working with as well as other particular conditions relative to working around your home.
