How carpets can improve your homes air quality.

Do carpets improve air qulity?

A study in Germany showed how carpeted rooms have half the levels of fine particle dust in the air compared to that of rooms with hard flooring.

Carpets hold onto dust.

This should not come as a surprise, carpets and other soft furnishings are great at holing onto dust, trapping it. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpets can trap up to 12 times their weight in dirt, dust, and other particles. But does carpets improve air qulity? By trapping dust and dust mites in the carpets rather than in the air can have particular benefits for people with asthma or other raspatory conditions. I grew up with asthma so I know the importance of keeping dust out of my air.

Carpets don’t just trap dust and dust mites but they also trap allergens and pollen.

Why is this good news?

So carpets can trap dust, pollen and other airborne pollutants but why is this good for us. By acting as natural air filters, carpets can help remove these harmful particles from the breathing zone, reducing the amount we inhale.

Why do carpets improve air quality?

Carpets can also be very good for us, carpets are the biggest air filter in our homes. Its been proven that carpeted living spaces have half the amount of fine dust in the air as hard surfaced living spaces. Carpets trap and hold onto particulate matter and allergens, where as hard flooring dose not so it circulates in the air. This is particularly important to people with sensitive respiratory systems. I grew up with asthma so I know the importance of clean air.

The impurities are still there but now they are trapped and we are not breathing them in. When allergens are floating in the air, people can inhale them and potentially experience respiratory problems such as sneezing, coughing, and wheezing. However, when allergens are trapped in the carpet fibers, they are no longer in the breathing zone and are less likely to cause problems. In fact, according to the American Lung Association, regularly cleaning carpets can help reduce allergens and improve indoor air quality for those who suffer from allergies and asthma.

How carpet cleaning can help?

The Environmental Protection Agency (USA) recommends vacuuming carpets at least once a week to remove surface-level dust and debris, and having carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year to remove deeper particles that vacuuming may miss. Regular cleaning both by the home owner vacuuming weekly and by professional cleaning every 6-24 months will remove these pollutants from the home for good. Our carpets are our homes air filters and we need to maintain those air filters to maintain cleaner air.
